Review: Evaluating SMARTCRET as a product for campervans
Now, let's dive into our honest review of SmartCrete based on several categories:
Aesthetics: The reason we went with this product. It looks absolutely stunning! It scores a 10/10 for aesthetics.
Durability: Holds up incredibly well. Very flexible and scratch-resistant. NOT heatproof, do not put hot pans and pots on it. Hot mugs are fine. Held up in off-road conditions. Scores an 8/10 for durability.
Waterproofing: The sealant that Smartcret provides does not create a fully waterproof seal, even though they state that it does. However, the company does offer an industrial-level sealant that works incredibly and seals the material 100%. Save yourself the time and headache, and get this sealant off the bat. For waterproofing, this product scores a 7/10 with the included varnish, and a 10/10 with the additional industrial sealant.

Ease of Use: This product is NOT easy to use. It is a long, complicated process with a steep learning curve, many steps, and long drying times. If you don’t have time and patience on hand, this product may not be for you. It scores a 4/10 in terms of ease of use.
Price: This product is expensive, and almost doubles in price due to shipping if you are not in Europe. For our build (350 sqft. / 32 sq.m), we spent a total of $2,700 USD. They occasionally have great promotions with huge discounts, so it might be smart to wait for one of those to purchase or to use one of the many US-based microcement suppliers. We give the product a 5/10 on price due to the high shipping costs.
Flexibility and Cracking: This product holds up amazingly and will not crack - as long as it’s used correctly! We made the mistake of trying to cover seams with this product to make everything look like solid pieces of concrete. This was a mistake that led to hairline cracks that we needed to cover later with trim pieces. If you don’t try to get fancy and cover up your seams, this product will never crack. The issue only stems from covering seams of 2 pieces (or more) of wood that are not completely joined together (as in fiberglassed to the point where the two pieces become one). For flexibility and cracking, we give Smartcret an 8/10 score.
Conclusion: Is Microcement Right for Your Van Conversion?
In conclusion, SmartCrete (or other microcement brands) can be an incredible and unique material to use in your campervan, providing stunning aesthetics and impressive durability. However, its difficulty of application and price make it not a suitable product for everyone.
